Lead On: Creative world changer Germán Gutiérrez

Conducting is the nuanced art of directing a musical performance — conductors must interpret a musical score and effectively relay their vision to each performer within an orchestra.Good conductors must be able to imagine themselves in the shoes of any musician to understand what each person needs and how to make him or her better.Great conductors, like Germán Gutiérrez, need passion and vision, as well as confidence and sincerity—characteristics also reflective of great leaders.
Gutierrez, director of orchestras and professor of orchestral studies at TCU, has taught and conducted hundreds of young North Texas musicians, many of whom have won scholarships and recognition from top universities. Additionally, under his leadership, the Youth Orchestra of Greater Fort Worth has achieved exceptional levels of recognition throughout the nation and abroad.

That level of commitment and success has extended to his work with TCU’s Latin American Music Center and biennial Latin American Music Festival for nearly two decades. He has led the TCU Symphony to international acclaim and is a frequent guest conductor of professional orchestras in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Oceania.

Gutierrez holds Músico Bachiller and Maestro en Música degrees from the Tolima Conservatory in Colombia, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Northern Colorado.
