The award, one of the highest honors given by the academy, recognizes Hitt’s long-term, positive impact on the field.
Michael Hitt, Distinguished Research Fellow at the TCU Neeley School of Business, was honored with the Career Achievement/Distinguished Educator Award at the annual meeting of the Academy of Management. Hitt was honored for significant contributions to the field of management through service, research, innovative teaching methods and breakthrough developments over the course of his career.
“This award is one of the highest honors given by the Academy, and it puts Mike and TCU in very elite company,” said Hettie Richardson, chair of the Department of Management, Entrepreneurship and Leadership at TCU Neeley.
Committee members who chose Hitt for the award had this to say:
“A humble and generous thought leader in the field of management, [a] portrait of [this] professor emerges from the myriad training activities he performed around the globe, and from the intense letters of colleagues whose knowledge and career were enhanced by scholarly interaction with him.”
“Professor Hitt has worked with numerous students over his academic career and has been involved in developing workshops promoting management education at the local, national and international levels. He serves as a formal and informal mentor to students and junior faculty.”

Hitt’s teaching and research span 40 years and cover the many dimensions of management and strategy. He won the Irwin Outstanding Educator Award from the Academy of Management, and has been honored by Thomson Reuters among the World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds and as a Highly Cited Researcher in 2014, 2015 and 2016. He has won numerous awards for outstanding articles, research, reviews, papers, leadership and teaching. He has served as a visiting scholar at universities around the world and judged case competitions for Notre Dame, Rutgers and more.
Hitt has served as editor of the Academy of Management Journal, and co-editor of the Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal and Advances in International Management. He has served or currently serves on the editorial board of dozens more scholarly journals. His research has been published in premier journals including Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Organization Science, Journal of Management, Journal of Operations Management, Journal of International Business Studies, among others.
Hitt has had leadership roles with several organizations to implement best practices in management, including serving as president and board member of the Academy of Management and the Strategic Management Society. He is a Fellow in the Academy of Management, Strategic Management Society and the Academy of International Business. He has also served on an advisory board of the Kauffman Foundation
Prior to TCU, Hitt taught at Texas A&M University, where he was the University Distinguished Professor Emeritus, and Arizona State University, the University of Texas at Arlington and Oklahoma State University. He holds a Ph.D. in organizational theory/organizational behavior, business policy and quantitative methods in economics from the University of Colorado, and an MBA and BBA from Texas Tech University.
