TCU has three Fulbright Finalists for the 2017-2018 academic year

TCU has three Fulbright Finalists for the upcoming academic year as decided by the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Philip Antinone, Nicholas Barnette and Kally Nord join approximately 1,900 other U.S. citizens who will teach, conduct research and provide expertise abroad.

The Fulbright Program is one of the top scholarships in the world, and TCU boasts nearly three dozen recipients of the prestigious award since 1965; with more than 24 since 2010.

Candidates for the Fulbright apply for positions in one of six countries. The U.S. Fulbright Committee reviews each application and forwards the frontrunners to the respective country’s Fulbright Commission for selection of the finalists.

“The application process for this scholarship is rigorous, and these three students—as well as our recent winners—worked diligently to identify countries and opportunities that fit their educational goals, skills and training,” said Dr. Ron Pitcock, J. Vaughn & Evelyne H. Wilson Honors Fellow and director of prestigious scholarships at TCU. “Their success speaks volumes about how TCU faculty support and educate their students.”

Phil Antinone

Antinone, who graduated last December as a John V. Roach Honors Laureate with a bachelor’s degree in music education, will teach English in Italy. He hopes to use his teaching experience and Italian minor to “inspire his students to develop their second language” and “create an academic year of growth and cultural exchange.” Antinone plans to pursue a Doctorate of Ministry and pastor a church in Italy while offering English classes on the side.

Nicholas Barnette

Barnette, who will graduate in May, will teach performance and theater to young students in Greece, “expanding pre-existing drama and debate extracurricular programs to include comedy writing and performance workshops.” Barnette is working to complete degrees in English and Film, TV and Digital Media, as well as his departmental Honors project, a memoir told through poems and essays. Upon completion of his teaching position, Barnette plans to pursue a master’s in creative writing and teach at the collegiate level.

Kally Nord

Early Childhood Education major Nord will use her English as a second language and bilingual specialization to create a rich cultural experience for her students in Spain. She plans to implement weekly service projects with her students and “create unity through shared language and action.” Nord, who will graduate in May, wants to be an elementary school teacher upon completion of her Fulbright program.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program operates in more than 140 countries throughout the world. Each finalist demonstrates academic and professional achievement as well as proven leadership in their respective fields.
