Alex Lemon, associate professor of English, and Zack Hawley, assistant professor of economics, were selected in NerdScholar’s 40 under 40 list, which recognizes inspiring university professors who display a love of teaching and cultivate passion in their students.
Both professors teach in the AddRan College of Liberal Arts. TCU is one of only three schools to receive multiple faculty nominations. From the website:
Lemon, an author and professor of creative writing and contemporary American literature, has been a proud TCU horned frog for six years. His high energy and sense of humor keep classes entertaining, his students say, and his feedback makes them into stronger writers. On top of this, Lemon’s caring nature draws students to his classes. So, what inspires him to teach? “My family, especially my mom, inspire not only my teaching, but they make me want to be good, to be compassionate and aware, and to fully live life,” he says.
A 29-year-old professor of economics, Hawley is one of the youngest on our list of inspiring teachers. His upbeat lecture style keeps his students engaged and showing up to class every day ready to learn. “I find their enthusiasm inspiring. Their ability to ask a simple and penetrating question keeps the subject in proper perspective; it keeps me asking the big questions as well, and not falling off too far into my specialty,” he says. The diverse student body keeps new perspectives at the table, he notes, which everyone benefits from.
